Winter is a top favorite season for most people because of the holiday season. But when it comes to a favorable season for your skin… Winter is nobody’s favorite.
What if I told you there are 5 super simple tips you can follow to save your skin this Winter that won’t break the bank? These tips will also work well for those of you with dry skin that you battle year round!
How do i know if i have “dry skin”?
Before we get into it, let’s quickly get on the same page about what I mean when I say “Dry” skin in this post. What I mean is dehydrated skin, as in lacking water content, which is the most common seasonal skin symptom we experience during cold weather months. Traditionally, “Dry” skin indicates the skin lacks oil. But that’s not what I’ll be referring to in this article.
With these tips, I’ll talk mostly about maintaining water content in your skin. The last tip includes the best product I’ve found to balance oil content in my skin when I’m experiencing dehydration. Oil content and water content in the skin are actually mutually exclusive, meaning you can still have dehydrated skin without having a “Dry” skin type. Regardless of if you are lacking oil or water in your skin, these tips will help you!
In other words, you can have an Oily or Combination skin type and still be experiencing dehydration. It’s important to know the difference so that you can treat your skin accordingly-giving it what it needs. Keep this in mind as you read.
Start with the “Don’ts” of Dry Skin
Let’s start with things you can stop doing to save your dry skin from becoming dry in the first place.
1. Don’t Use Super Hot Water
I’m totally guilty of cranking up the faucet and favoring the hottest water for washing and showering. When it’s cold outside, it may feel amazing momentarily. But overusing hot water can really dry out your skin and can even create sensitivity and inflammation. It’s as simple as turning the temperature down to be a little kinder to your skin!
2. Don’t Skip Your Sunscreen
It can be tempting to skip sunscreen when the weather is gloomy and cold, but this is a huge mistake. Remember the UV rays that cause harm to the skin are still present, no matter what the weather looks like. Dehydrated skin is one of the first signs of sun damage, so there’s no reason to make that risk of sun exposure and thus the risk of dehydration to your skin even worse. It will always benefit you to wear your sunscreen for protection. A bonus is that many sunscreen formulas are notorious for having a “slip” or slightly greasy feeling. When you’re dry as a bone, that little extra “slip” can be soothing or even counteract some of the surface dryness.
3. Don’t Crank Up The Heat
Having the heater up on colder days can make things feel cozy in the moment. But if it’s too hot and there’s a lack of humidity in the air, you may be drying out your skin. Similar to the bit about avoiding hot water, you’re better off avoiding overdoing it on the indoor heating. When you have a hot and dry environment inside your house, you’re creating an environment for the moisture in your skin to literally evaporate. It’s called Trans-Epidermal Water Loss, or TEWL. It basically means that the moisture in your skin evaporates into the air. And if you have the heater on super blast, that’s not helping your skin retain any moisture.
Hot Tip: Keep a humidifier on if you must have the heater on. It’ll preserve the moisture in the air (and Thus save your Dry skin) as much as possible!
Now “do” These Things to help your dry skin
Here are the 2 best things you SHOULD do to counteract your dry skin:
4. Drink Your Water
It’s not a fun tip…it’s actually kind of boring and super obvious. Yet you’re STILL not drinking enough water, are you? If we as humans are made up largely of water and we are not replenishing and hydrating our bodies from the inside by drinking enough water, it’s no wonder our largest ordan (our skin) suffers for it! Match the number of Peppermint Mochas you’re drinking this Winter with glasses of water. Trust me.
5. Use a good Moisturizer (that’s right for your skin type)!
I saved the best for last- a product rec that I know will be game changing for you. The Weleda Skin Food Ultra-Rich Cream is a hero product. It will soothe dehydrated skin but also nourish the new, fresh skin cells with oils that work to restore the skin’s natural balance of oil and water. For some, the Ultra-Rich formula is a bit too rich. They do make a “Light” version that is just as amazing while being better suited for oily skin types. I personally have tried both and favor the Light version for my Oily and Acne-prone skin.
